blessed are the merciful

Matthew 5:7

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy."

How do you interpret this verse in light of understanding the Gospel?

I feel like it's backwards and should say, "Because God has shown us mercy in Christ, blessed are we when we're merciful to one another"...

We're discussing this in our small group, what do you think?

  1. We know that God's salvation mercy cannot be merited by any "good works" on our part. so....

Can Christians say, we have received mercy (sins washed away by the blood), we are receiving mercy (we are becoming whole) and we will receive mercy (we will be made completely whole in heaven with our glorified bodies)?

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life [the hope of "fullness" of His mercy toward us]. And have mercy on some,[mercy here and now toward others] who are doubting; Jude 1:21-22

This was the closest passage I could find that seems to fit that interpretation of Matt 5:7

  2. He who knew no sin, became sin so that we can be freed from the grip of sin and death. Amazing Grace!
